Expressing necessity

Expressing necessity: must and have to

a) All applicants must take an entrance exam

b) All applicants have to take entrance exam

Must and have to both express necessity. In (a), (b):It is necessary for every applicant to take an entrance exam. There is no other choice. The exam is required.

c) I'm looking for Nofa.I have to talk to her about our lunch date tomorrow. I can't meet her for lunch because I have to go to a business meeting at 1:00

In every statement of necessity, have to is used more commonly than must. Must is usually stronger than have to and indicate urgency or stress importance.

In (c): the speaker is simply saying,''I need to do this,and to do that

In(d):The speaker is strongly saying "this is very very important

Notes:

(.. has to is used with (he,she,it

have to is used with (they, we,you,I

the past form of (has to and have to is had to

There is no other past form for must

here u will find some examples

a) a person must eat in order to live
b) if you want to become a doctor, you must go to medical school for many years
c) I don’t have enough money to take the bus,so I have to walk home
d) He has to go to a meeting tonight
e) a person has to get married in order to lead a happy and fulfilling life
